"I was a person who probably had only gone to the doctor about six times in my life," recounts Sharon B. "I was just coasting along with no medical problems.”
But three years ago, Sharon was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. In speaking with someone who had undergone cancer treatments, she learned that the massive doses of chemotherapy administered to shrink the tumor, in addition to double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery exacted a heavy toll on her overall health.
“She recommended Dr. Dale Guyer," Sharon says.
Sharon set up an appointment prior to her first chemotherapy session, but remained apprehensive about the experience.
"I was a skeptical," she remembers before her first visit.
Prior to surgery and chemotherapy, Dr. Guyer ran tests to check for any vitamin deficiencies, then recommended intravenous vitamin therapy and oral supplements to help offset against the burden that chemotherapy and surgery would place on her system.
"I would go in three times per week for intravenous vitamin treatments before to chemotherapy, so that I would build up my system really well," she says. "In between chemo, I would go in once per week. It did the trick!"
Before surgery, the surgeon warned Sharon that the experience would be debilitating.
"You are going to feel like a Mack truck hit and ran over you a second time," the doctor warned. "You might feel like a human being one and two weeks later."
The day after her surgery, however, the surgeon discovered Sharon dressed, sitting up in a chair, and eating breakfast in her hospital room.
"People just don’t do this well," the doctor told her.
“It was amazing,” Sharon states.
While most individuals suffer profound side effects from chemotherapy, Sharon noted few of the more common complaints.
"I would have a horrible taste in my mouth like I had just swallowed poison, which basically I did," Sharon says. "Most people lose weight and are extremely sick.
But I was so conscious of not wanting to lose any weight and get sick that I gained 12 pounds during the experience.”
Unfortunately, the cancer returned about one and one half years ago.
"At that time, they said that I would have two years to live at best," she relates. "I went back to Dr. Guyer. Of course, he has all these aces in the whole. He researched everything. I now go every week for chemotherapy, and every week I also go to Dr. Guyer for the intravenous vitamin therapy and take my supplements. He also hooked me up with healing touch and hypnosis therapies while going through surgery. His avenue of knowledge is just phenomenal. So far, so good. Basically, I am in remission now."
Unlike many individuals who face with life-threatening challenges and retreat into depression and anxiety, Sharon chose a different path both physically and mentally.
"Basically, you have two choices," she advises. "You can let the cancer consume you or you can try to consume it. Any one of us could be hit by a truck tomorrow, so why not give life your best shot today."
The positive attitude and alternative therapies are tools that Sharon uses to cope with cancer and its challenges.
"The people at Dr. Guyer’s office are absolutely the most caring, wonderful group of people that I have ever met in my life," she says. "You walk in that door, and the entire atmosphere is comforting. I have often said throughout this experience that if I had to give up all but one doctor, including the radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, and others, that doctor would be Dr. Guyer."
