Digestive Stool Analysis
The Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis is a test that is performed by Great SmokeyÆs Diagnostic Laboratory in Asheville, North Carolina. It provides a comprehensive analysis of digestion, absorption, the colonic environment and an overall analysis of relative dysbiosis, in addition to doing generalized screens for the presence of parasites.
The information gleaned from this testing includes:
A detailed analysis of the adequacy of digestion by measuring components of the stool, inclusive of triglycerides and chymotrypsin. This information is helpful in determining how effective an individual person\'s digestive system may be in actually breaking down larger molecules to prepare them for eventual absorption.
A screen for microscopic proteinaceous and complex carbohydrate fibers. Noted elevations of these substances on a test such as this are clear indications of an impairment of the digestive process.
Measurements of parameters of adequate absorption, including long chain fatty acids, cholesterol, short chain fatty acids and total fecal fat. Higher amounts of these products in the stool can demonstrate that a person\'s capacity to absorb these active nutrients is limited. This can occur for a variety of reasons and may be related to chronic, long-term stress, use of certain types of medications or any type of physiologic insult that can have the capacity to damage the cellular integrity of the gastrointestinal system.
Measurements of the levels of friendly bacteria, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.
Measurements of the levels of unfriendly bacteria that may be present, in addition to the amount of yeast or Candida type of forms.
A screen of metabolic markers which can indicate relative gastrointestinal dysbiosis or imbalances in bacterial flora as well as activity of the immune system and the presence of active nutritional components that are derived from normal colonic flora metabolism that provide nutritional support for the body\'s immune system and the overall health and integrity of the cell\'s of the gastrointestinal system.
Should pathogens be noted, a parasitology screen and a culture and sensitivity will be performed, to see what types of compounds, such as antibiotics and natural herbal medicines might be used to adequately treat the condition. Dr. Guyer will provide a detailed overview of the results of the test at your follow-up visit.
