DMAE
DMAE is a natural substance that is found in a variety of food products. It is concentrated in certain types of sea foods, such as anchovies and sardines. DMAE has been shown to improve mood, memory, and learning ability in both humans and animals. Some studies suggest that it may actually increase intelligence. It has also been shown to extend the life span of laboratory animals, in addition to increasing physical energy.
DMAE used to be marketed as a prescription medicine by Riker Laboratories. (The prescription medicine was known as Deanol.) However, for the most part, DMAE products are available over-the-counter at most health food stores.
More recently, DMAE has gained a fair amount of attention in terms of its possible utility in treating certain types of learning disabilities, under achievement, shortened attention span, hyperactivity, reading and speech difficulties, impaired motor coordination and behavioral problems in children. DMAE works by improving the brain's ability to synthesize the act of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays a key role in maximizing mental focus and memory.
Most over-the-counter products are in the form of DMAE bitartrate. However, the more active version of DMAE that is identical to the compound that was formerly available only by prescription. It is 2-dimethylaminoethanol- P- acetamidobenzoate. It is only available in this country through Bio-Tech Laboratories in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is available by mail order through some of its distributors. A usual dose is 250 mg, one or two times daily. However, doses up to 1,000 mg daily have been used with good results. Of course, the dose would vary depending on the individual and the type of problems being treated. Side effects are rare, but can include insomnia, a dull headache, or muscle tenseness.
